Meditation - Achieving a Stress Free Life

Meditation can achieve many physical and psychological benefitsMeditation is an approach that has been used for thousands of years to help cope with medical problems, stress and anxiety. Meditation is gaining in popularity as more and more people recognise the physical and emotional benefits we can derive. The regular practice of meditation will improve your life.

What is Meditation

Meditation means awareness. The word meditation is derived from 2 Latin words:

  • Meditari – to think, to dwell upon, to exercise the mind AND
  • Mediri – to heal

Meditation describes a state of consciousness where your mind is freed from scattered thought patterns and your brain goes into a state of deep relaxation. The goal of meditation is a mind that is quiet and free from stress.

Achieving the State of Meditation

Classical yoga teaches that to attain the true state of meditation you must go through several stages:

Physical Position
Breath Control
Relaxation

Concentration
Contemplation

Absorption

Today however, meditation schools teach a variety of techniques. Some schools only teach concentration techniques, some relaxation, others contemplative activities like just sitting and awaiting absorption. Linda has recently started a meditation group and can teach you how to achieve the state of absorption. If you are interested in joining this group, then contact Linda. The class is held every Monday evening and payment is only by way of donation.

Benefits of Meditation

There are a variety of benefits that you will achieve by using meditation regularly. Meditation can bring about healing of both the body and mind:

  • Physical benefits include a decrease in blood pressure and an improvement in breathing. Chemicals in the body caused from stress are also reduced, leading to reduced anxiety levels. Meditation can even promotes youthful skin and a youthful appearance.
  • Meditation also has many Psychological Benefits. Relaxation and decrease in stress are obvious benefits, as well as improved moods and memory. With regular meditation your moodiness and depression will decrease.
